About the Course

Are you ready to dive into the world of data engineering? In this beginner level course, you will gain a solid understanding of how data is stored, processed, and accessed in relational databases (RDBMSes). You will work with different types of databases that are appropriate for various data processing requirements. You will begin this course by being introduced to relational database concepts, as well as several industry standard relational databases, including IBM DB2, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. Next, you’ll utilize RDBMS tools used by professionals such as phpMyAdmin and pgAdmin for creating and maintaining relational databases. You will also use the command line and SQL statements to create and manage tables. This course incorporates hands-on, practical exercises to help you demonstrate your learning. You will work with real databases and explore real-world datasets. You will create database instances and populate them with tables and data. At the end of this course, you will complete a final assignment where you will apply your accumulated knowledge from this course and demonstrate that you have the skills to: design a database for a specific analytics requirement, normalize tables, create tables and views in the database, load and access data. No prior knowledge of databases or programming is required. Anyone can audit this course at no-charge. If you choose to take this course and earn the Coursera course certificate, you can also earn an IBM digital badge upon successful completion of the course....

Great course that sums up all that it teaches at the end, unfortunately I encountered an error loading PostgreSQL and MySQL at the end on the cloud IBM platform so I did it in VisCode

It's an excellent course and I do recommend it. I'm giving it four out of five stars as the guidance on the final project could use a little more elaboration. From the context of someone who's just starting out learning relational databases, too much was left to guesswork and there's really no good way to know if you're doing the tasks correctly other than intentionally failing so that you can review what other (experienced) students did and therefore understand where you went wrong. It's aggravating, and so a little more pedagogical attention could be paid to explaining what is required for each task. With that said, this is a worthwhile course and I'm glad I took it.

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the RDBMS concepts, making it a good introduction for those new to the subject. However, I felt that certain topics, such as database architecture and properties of relations, could benefit from more explanations, examples and illustrations. Additionally, some illustrations and animations in the video tutorials do not seem to convey their intended meaning effectively, and therefore do not add much value to the learning experience. The hands-on labs were quite helpful, but some, especially in modules 1 and 2, contain minor mistakes that led to confusion, as evidenced by the questions raised in the forum.

The course itself is very interesting and challenging. I found that SQL code uploads for PostgreSQL labs did not work properly, which added a lot of frustration, especially during final project. If you face the same issue, you can simply copy and paste the code into Query tool and run it manually, instead of trying to upload the code file over and over (and face the same failure error as I did). I wish instructors would update the lab instructions to keep up with app updates.

The labs are great to get started in database design & architecture. I would like that videos were less "robotic" and a little more dynamic. But overall the final challenge is really good
