What factors affect your digital marketing salary?

Education

For some digital marketing jobs, having a bachelor’s degree, a graduate degree, or certifications in high-priority skills leads to a higher salary. According to Zippia, 76 percent of digital marketing specialists have a bachelor's degree, and 10 percent have a master's degree [8]. Relevant majors include business, marketing, communication, and public relations.

Experience

Your background in digital marketing may contribute to your earning potential. Experience may include employment, contract or freelance work, or even marketing your own business. 

Role 

Advanced positions in digital marketing, such as digital marketing manager, tend to command higher base salaries. Glassdoor reports the median total salary of a digital market manager is $130,000 as of August 2025 [2]. Compare that to an entry-level or individual contributor position, such as a digital marketing specialist, which Glassdoor reports as earning a median total salary of $73,000 [9].

Skills 

Having key digital marketing skills may make you a more attractive job candidate with higher earning potential. Be sure to read job descriptions for required and preferred skills.

For example, Glassdoor estimates that companies like Amazon, Cisco Systems, and Disney offer digital marketing managers salaries above $100,000, while nonprofits like the YMCA and United Way offer salaries around $70,000 or $80,000 [2].

Industry 

Similarly, the industry you work in will impact your salary range. For example, Glassdoor reports that a digital marketing manager in financial services can make a median total salary of $131,330, while a digital marketing manager in telecommunications can make $128,548 as of August 2025 [2].

City 

Salaries tend to vary city by city. The five highest-paying cities for digital marketing managers, according to Zippia, include [11]:
