About the Course

This course is an introduction to the religion of the Vikings as it is recorded in Old Norse and Scandinavian literature from the medieval period. You will learn about the different written sources and what they can teach us about pre-Christian religion in northern Europe in the Viking Age. The course surveys the primary collection of Old Norse poetry about the pre-Christian Scandinavian gods, the Poetic Edda. We will also work with the main collections of stories about the Old Norse gods in prose: Snorri Sturluson's Edda and Saxo's History of the Danes....

Rich in material and thorough. The instructor knows his stuff and included material sources and place names to illuminate Norse culture. Really fun.

The short synopsis videos and detail portrayed in this course give a very thorough insight into the Norse Mythology from the various sources available.

After finishing this course, I feel like I have a solid background to start reading Snorri's Edda, etc. However, I would have liked to see readings integrated into the video lectures. The lectures are informative, but there isn't enough of a 'frame' to hang all the details on.

Though the mythology and stories are interesting in their own right, the presentation of them was not as engaging as I would have liked. I would've liked more visuals or videos, less narration.

I felt that the instructor was not fully engaged, probably because he was simply reading from a script and did not even appear on video once. In fact, there was no need for videos at all, a transcript would have worked. He should have spent more time introducing each section and providing more explanations. Overall I feel like we were dropped into the course in medias res.
