About the Course

Design a User Experience for Social Good and Prepare for Jobs is the seventh and final course in a program that will equip you with the skills you need to become an entry-level UX designer. In this course, you will design a dedicated mobile app and a responsive website focused on social good. You will showcase all that you’ve learned during the certificate program to complete the design process from beginning to end: empathizing with users, defining their pain points, coming up with ideas for design solutions, creating wireframes and prototypes, and testing designs to get feedback. By the end of this course, you will have a new cross-platform design project to include in your professional UX portfolio. This course will also prepare you to land your first job as a UX designer. You’ll learn how to interview for entry-level UX design positions. You’ll get tips from Googlers based on their own interview experiences and their unique perspectives as hiring managers. And, you’ll polish the professional UX portfolio you’ve been building throughout the program so that it’s ready for job applications. Current UX designers and researchers at Google will serve as your instructors, and you will complete hands-on activities that simulate real-world UX design scenarios. Learners who complete the seven courses in this certificate program should be equipped to apply for entry-level jobs as UX designers. By the end of this course, you will be able to: - Apply each step of the UX design process (empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test) to create designs focused on social good. - Identify the differences between dedicated mobile apps and responsive web apps. - Understand progressive enhancement and graceful degradation approaches for designing across devices. - Build wireframes, mockups, and low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes. - Add a new design project to your professional UX portfolio. - Create your portfolio of design work for job applications. - Join and participate in online UX communities. - Interview for an entry-level UX design job. - Determine if freelance design work is a good career fit for you. - Learn AI skills from Google experts to help complete UX design tasks. This course is suitable for beginner-level UX designers who have completed the previous six courses of the Google UX Design Certificate....

Creating an app for social good was a nice touch, it gave me a chance to create a more refined project than the main project I worked on for this course, drawing on all the skills I've learned and improved on, which made for a nice addition to my portfolio. This course does a really good job of helping new jobseekers prepare for interviews and learn what to expect from the UX design hiring process. Like the rest of the lessons in this program, it does also lack a bit of cohesion. It also includes a section on AI in the last module after you've already completed the program, which felt weird. It felt like a sales pitch for Gemini. It also seemed to constantly imply that you can use Gemini to do things without applying conscious thought to what you're doing, which I thought was irresponsible. AI generations need to be treated as rough drafts, never final drafts. Despite saying AI's job is "not to replace humans," what came after felt blatantly contradictory. AI is useful for a lot of things, but it seems like Google is a little too enthusiastic about such new technology and embellishes what it can and can't do.

Comprehensive, but too long and repetitive I learned a lot in this program, however, it was unnecessarily long and repetitive. I would have preferred an option to learn via videos or reading, rather than have to repeat information on both formats with mostly the same content. It was also in a strange order, repeatedly dipping in and out of a subject. The quizzes could also be specific in a way that wasn't very helpful in testing knowledge. It would have been nice to have a comprehensive how-to deck or notes provided at the start or end of the course, as note taking took up a lot of time. The most helpful part of the course was the first case study project, as that provided hands on experience practicing these approaches. This is a solid option if you are new to UX design. However, the creators need to practice what they preach and do some UX design on its own course!

It contained a lot of repeat content that took time to go through. Some of the assignments and readings linked to past courses and i think that model should have been utilized a lot more. I also think there should be more safeguards for trolls that will just give you 0s for peer review for no reason. There should at the very least be a way to report them for that behaviour when their feedback doesn't apply to the submission. Otherwise i think the course was very well put together, if not a little coddling. It would be nice if there was a way to test out of courses that the user is already proficient in like using Adobe XD. That said I can tell how much time it took to put all these courses together so thank you for providing this to us!
